Five men who stole jewellery valued at Dh1.5m from a shop in Dubai will spend three years in jail each.

Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced the men – all drivers aged between 25 and 35 – to jail followed by deportation.
Records show that the five masked men - including two at large-  stormed the shop on July 12 last year and stole Dh1.5 million worth of jewellery after pepper-spraying the staff and threatened them with knives. They locked the staff members in the toilet of the International City shop then fled with the valuables.
"We started investigating and gathering evidence, listening to testimonies then arrested three men who we discovered were involved in the robbery," a police lieutenant said.
He said the men admitted to visiting the shop to survey it prior to the incident then planned the robbery.
"They said they bought sports clothes, masks, gloves, knives and pepper-spray for the robbery.

"When it was the time, four of the men went into the shop and one remained outside to keep guard," said the officer.
After the robbery, the men fled to Jebel Ali where they disposed of their clothes and the tools. They then travelled to Al Ain where they divided the stolen jewellery, part of which was seized from the three men.

Three of the men were sentenced in their presence while the other two were sentenced in their absence.
