DUBAI// An online fund set up to repatriate the body of a British holidaymaker who died after being hit by a car has raised more than Dh77,000 since his death.

Gavin Duffy was on holiday in Dubai when the accident happened, but he did not have travel insurance.

“Unfortunately, Gavin did not have travel insurance for his trip to Dubai and so we are now trying to raise funds to contribute to his safe journey home back to the UK,” said Rachel Mulloy, who organised the online appeal.

“This will ensure his family and friends are able to lay him to rest at the earliest opportunity.”

The appeal surpassed its target of Dh12,000 with cash being donated by 573 people in just 19 hours.

Mr Duffy, believed to be in his late 20s, was from Billingham in Teeside in the North East of England and was described as having an “infectious” personality.

“If you had the pleasure to meet Gavin, you would agree that he had an infectious personality and lust for life that touched everyone that he met,” posted Ms Mulloy.

“He was also an accomplished runner and completed many events on behalf of various charities.”

The appeal proved so popular that a third page had to be set up on Monday to accept more donations.

“Donation Page 3 – Current rolling total from previous two donation pages is in excess of £4,000 (Dh23,400) – we are overwhelmed by your generosity,” she posted.

Many of those who gave money left messages of condolence.

“We didn’t know you but we hope you get home to your family soon RIP,” said one.

“Hope his family get him home soon,” posted another.

The British consulate in Dubai confirmed that it was aware of Mr Duffy’s death and was helping his family.

A spokeswoman for the British Consulate said: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
