From Dubai to Muscat on foot for cancer research
DUBAI // A Dubai resident plans to spend a week walking the 406km route from Dubai to Muscat in October to aid cancer research. Andrew Roughton, 28, a human resources manager in Dubai, said: "We have a history of cancer in the family. My grandmother had cancer and my mother had cancer twice. This was something I was intending to do - to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK."
Cancer Research UK, a charity dedicated to curing cancer, supports the work of more than 4,800 researchers, doctors and nurses. Between October 1-8, Mr Roughton will walk for 10 hours a day, beginning at Dubai International Airport and winding up at Muscat Airport. "It's going to be hard but the distance is achievable." Mr Roughton, who has lived in Dubai for four years and completed the Dubai Marathon in 2009, said preparations for his journey were going well. He intends to participate in the Dubai Marathon again next year and is training for both events concurrently.
He said he had originally planned to raise £1,000 (Dh5,861) by October, and has already exceeded the target. As of yesterday he had raised £1,330. Donations can be made online until October 11 at http://www.justgiving.com/dubaimuscatwalk. * Ramona Ruiz
