France's foreign minister will begin a two day visit to Abu Dhabi when he will meet the French community and inaugurate a new Louvre exhibition.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is due to arrive on Sunday, the French government said in a news release.

He will also meet with senior officials to "take stock of bilateral relations and key regional issues, while France and the United Arab Emirates share the common goal of easing tensions", the statement read.

The minister will take part in the inauguration of the preschool at the Lycée Louis Massignon in Abu Dhabi - which first opened in 1972.

It is now one of six schools in the French education network in the UAE. He will be joined by Hussein Al Hammadi, Minister of Education and teachers and pupils.

He will also meet Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, and will inaugurate the new temporary exhibition at Louvre Abu Dhabi named 10,000 Years of Luxury, which showcases 350 objects that symbolise the history of fashion, jewelry, art and design.

Mr Le Drian will also visit Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi to present the Grand Prix for International Business Volunteers (VIE).

The minister was last in the Middle East two weeks ago when he visited Iraq for talks with officials about transferring thousands of Isis suspects from Syria to Iraq for trial.

He was also critical of the Turkish campaign against Kurdish forces in Syria, which was halted last week.
