Asthmatic boy and his father allegedly attacked by four Emirati youths.
Four teens arrested over asthmatic boy assault
DUBAI // Police yesterday announced the arrest four teenagers who videotaped their assault of a 14-year-old asthmatic boy and his father at an Al Hamriya grocery store.
Brigadier General Khalil al Mansouri, director of the Dubai Police Criminal Investigation Department, yesterday said the four youths were arrested within hours of the Saturday afternoon attack after their parents fully co-operated.
"The four teenagers were Emiratis aged between 14 and 16," al Mansouri said.
"Investigations led us to their homes but they were not present. Their families co-operated and, after a few hours, they were placed under arrest".
According to Brigadier General al Mansouri the attack on the boy was fuelled by previous differences between the 14-year-old boy and the group.
The boy, who was returning with his father from a doctor's visit at Rashid Hospital, was attacked at a grocery store as he was purchasing some items, police said.
When the father saw his son being attacked, he attempted to intervene but was assaulted by the teenagers. Reports state the father was stabbed in the back and different parts of his body with a screwdriver.
The boy was left with minor injuries and the father was sent to Rashid Hospital with moderate injuries, according to a source at the hospital.
"We are continuing to increase our patrols and are making sure to detain anyone found with cold weapons," said al Mansouri, referring to non-traditional arms
"We do not want to treat youths like criminals but we will enforce law and order to it's maximum extent to eradicate this phenomena of violence that we see," he added.
In March 2010, a 13-year-old Emirati boy died after being attacked by a gang of teenagers in Al Rashidiya. Five of the attackers are in the process of contesting their sentencing in the Dubai Court of Appeal.
