Four men who kidnapped a student alleged to have fled the scene of a car crash have been given six-month suspended sentences.

Dubai Criminal Court heard how the defendants drove to the home of the teenager, 19, and forced him into their car soon after the accident last June.

The gang first took the motorist to a hospital so he could see the extent of the injuries suffered by a friend of theirs involved in the same road accident.

They then drove him to a police station and insisted he confess to leaving the scene of the crash – but he instead accused them of kidnap.

“After getting hold of the student, we informed a police officer that we were bringing him in”, said one Emirati defendant, 23.

Police officers later arrested and charged the four defendants, aged between 18 and 23.

In court, the men claimed they wanted the student to admit he had been under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
