Former Pakistan ambassador to the US 'wrote secret letter over army'

A controversial Pakistani judicial investigation has found that the country's former ambassador to the US wrote a secret letter to American officials requesting their help in reining in the country's army.

ISLAMABAD // A controversial Pakistani judicial investigation has found that the country's former ambassador to the United States did indeed write a secret letter to American officials requesting their help in reining in the powerful army last year, a legislator told the state media said yesterday.

The finding could lead to treason charges against the envoy and add to pressures on Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistani president.

The former envoy, Husain Haqqani, has denied any role in authoring the memo, and said the commission report was "political and one-sided". Many independent observers have also concluded that the probe was politicised.

He resigned from his post after the scandal broke and currently lives in America.
