Just 15 months after opening, visitors to the Last Exit food stops on Sheikh Zayed Road feared the quirky motorway services may be about to close.

Motorists vented their disappointment at stopping off at Mad X, en route to Dubai Parks and Resorts, to find many of the food trucks were no longer parked there.

After social media outcry over the closures of some outlets at Jebel Ali North, developers said new food trucks would soon be moving in to fill the void.

Poco Loco, Dirty Dog, Bao Wow and Gyros were all found to be shut down by disappointed visitors who stopped off to fuel up on their favourite food this month.

One member of the Best Bites Abu Dhabi Facebook group said all the ‘interesting’ outlets had closed and there was no longer a children’s food truck.

Another expressed her disappointment at stopping off hoping to tuck in and finding just a solitary burger truck was open for business.

Meraas, the government developer behind the Last Exit service stops, said more food trucks are in the pipeline and will be opening ‘soon’.

“Last Exit is known for being an innovative concept,” a spokesman said.

“So as part of our efforts to bring something new to the public and ensure they are always pleasantly surprised, we have re-looked at some of the offerings at Last Exit Jebel Ali North.

“We will be replacing previously existing concepts with new food and beverage offerings that appeal to our customers such as Pop Slider, Refuel, Sushi Station, Kabab & Rigag and Don Pizza to name a few.

“As always we are focused on remaining relevant by ensuring that we continue to be the favourite stop for our visitors.”

The Last Exit E11 and Mad Max themed Mad X stop off have been popular additions to Sheikh Zayed Road, helping break up the journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

In February, a temporary open-air cinema opened as part of the Dubai Food Festival, showing Hollywood films for free.

There are four similar Last Exit food stops in the UAE, at the D63 Al Qudra, one in either direction on the E11 near junction 11 and on the D89.
