A gang of five were arrested in Sharjah on suspicion of scamming people over the phone.

Eastern region police were tipped-off about a gang running a scam from a rented apartment in Al Barsha in Dubai.

“The five suspects used several mobile phones and sim cards to call random numbers posing as representative of major telecommunication companies,” said Lt Col Ali Al Tunaiji, director of the criminal and investigation department.

“They would tell them they won a prize and ask for their account details to allow them to send the money,” said Lt Col Al Tunaiji.

Sharjah Police collaborated with Dubai Police to arrest the five Pakistani suspects and seize a large number of mobile SIM cards and smartphones from their flat.

All five admitted to their crime and were referred to public prosecution.

“We urge the public to report such phone calls and messages to police," said Lt Col Al Tunaiji.
