Fire trucks are continuing efforts to extinguish a blaze on a large cargo boat that caught fire after a generator on a smaller craft ignited on Dubai Creek last night.

Both boats, now on the Bur Dubai side of the creek, contained cars, car parts, clothes and plastic bottles to be exported to Mogadishu, Somalia.

Civil Defence officials said no oil appeared to have spilled into the creek from the boats' petrol tanks. Dubai Municipality divers are expected to search the creek for debris.

The fire broke out last night around 8pm on the Deira side of the creek and took well over two hours to control.

Civil Defence said they had moved the boats to the middle of the creek to prevent the fire from spreading. However the wind had pushed them closer to the Bur Dubai bank.

Flames were still visible on the larger boat this morning.
