SHARJAH // A mattress factory in Industrial Area 10 has been destroyed by a fire.

The blaze broke out at about 2.30pm when most of the staff were taking a break at a nearby labour camp.

“When it started we all moved out, each with his mattress and other possessions that could be saved in case the fire spread to our accommodations as well,” said a worker.

The men piled their mattresses, blankets and other belongings in the street beside neighbouring buildings as the fire swept through their workplace.

Fire crews prevented the flames from spreading to the labour camp and other nearby buildings.

Brig Abdullah Saeed Al Suwaidi, the director general of Sharjah Civil Defence, said firefighters from stations in Samnan, industrial areas and Al Nassiriya helped to tackle the blaze. No one was killed or injured, he added.

Sharjah CID has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
