DUBAI // At least one man was injured after a fire broke out last night on two cargo boats in Dubai Creek.

Civil Defence officials said the fire started around 8pm. Two hours later, firefighters were still battling the blaze.

“The fire is continuing on the two cargo boats,” said a Civil Defence spokesman. “One person was injured and has been sent to hospital.”

Witnesses said the fire burnt the boats’ moorings and burning debris had started floating towards the Bur Dubai side of the Creek.

“The boats moved from the Deira side,” said a witness on a dhow cruise on Dubai Creek. “When the fire started, they were in the loading bay. But the boats’ ropes broke after the fire burnt them and they floated towards the other side because of the strong winds,” he said.

Officials were not able to confirm this.

The fire seemed to be under control by 11pm, the witness said, adding that firefighters continued to spray water to douse the flames.
