A fire broke out on Abu Dhabi's Reem Island this afternoon, sending plumes of dark smoke across the sky.

The fire was at the far end of the island at a construction site close to Amaya Towers. Eyewitnesses said there was no damage to residential buildings in the area.

Abu Dhabi Civil Defence quickly attended the scene and the fire had been contained by 3.55pm. A helicopter also monitored the site.

Workers returned to the site swiftly after the fire was extinguished. It is not yet clear what caused the blaze.
