DUBAI // A waitress organised a birthday party where she and her guests took amphetamines and crystal meth, the criminal court heard on Sunday.

Prosecutors charged Filipino E D, 35, with taking drugs and using her home as a place of consumption. Her compatriot L F, 27, was charged with possessing and taking drugs, as well as facilitating drug consumption to E D and three other women.

Both defendants confessed to charges at the Dubai Criminal Court.

Prosecutors said that they were arrested on October 23 last year after Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department received a tip-off.

During interrogation by prosecutors, E D admitted that she had invited her friends to her birthday party after arranging with L F to supply the drugs.

The forensics laboratory reports confirmed traces of drugs in the defendants’ urine.

Court records show that the other three women have been referred to the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours to face charges of taking a mind-altering substance. Under UAE law, this charge is considered a misdemeanour, while taking controlled drugs, such as amphetamines and crystal meth, are heard before the criminal court.

A verdict is expected on March 2.
