ABU DHABI // Electrical problems caused almost 40 per cent of all fires in Dubai last year, the police say.

Of the 682 recoded fires in 2012, 262 were caused by bad wiring, the general department of forensic evidence and criminology at Dubai Police said yesterday.

Overloading plug points and poor quality wiring were major causes of electrical fires, said senior examiner Majdi Mohammed Kamel, who also warned against using plugs with loose wiring and cheap cable extensions.

Other fire hazards highlighted in the 2012 statistics were cooking oil, cigarette butts and unattended embers, such as those used for shisha pipes.
