An unemployed man who posed as a Dubai Municipality official before kidnapping and raping a tourist has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Dubai Criminal Court heard how the Bangladeshi defendant, 46, confronted two visitors to the city in October last year.

Carrying a fake ID and a hand-held radio, he claimed to be a city inspector and demanded to see the pair’s identification.

When the male tourist was unable to provide any he was told to leave to find it. His female friend was told she would be taken to a police station but was instead led to a secluded park and raped.

“He told my friend to go home and get his ID, and that I had to go with him to the police station,” the victim, 22, said.

The court heard the woman was beaten up, gagged and then raped during the horrific assault near Al Mamzar beach.

She managed to escape following the attack and police later charged the man with kidnap, rape and impersonating a public official.

The defendant denied all charges but was convicted and ordered to be deported after serving his sentence.
