Foggy weather is expected to linger across the UAE over the weekend and even into next week, forecasters have warned.

It could affect almost all areas of the country but will lift by midday to leave clear skies.

Temperatures will be lower over the weekend, ranging from the low to mid-20°Cs.

Speed limits were reduced for a third time this week on Thursday, as dense fog rolled in again overnight.

Forecasters issued an alert as the murky weather descended upon most of the country, covering the western border, up to as far as Sharjah, and deep inland.

Visibility dropped to below 1,000 metres, prompting police to lower the legal speed limit on a number of motorways to 80kph.

The fog season typically begins in mid-December and lasts until the end of March.

Fog needs certain conditions to form, such as calm winds and a clear atmosphere. These are more common at this time of the year as the seasons change.

Most fogs in the UAE fall under two categories – radiation and advection. Both types of fog can result in extremely dangerous driving conditions.

In February 2018, a lorry ploughed into a line of vehicles during thick fog.
