A club aimed at promoting renewable energy worldwide was launched in Berlin yesterday on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) inaugurated the Renewables Club as a high-level political alliance to scale up renewable energy deployment for a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The UAE, China, India, Morocco, Denmark, South Africa and Tonga were among the countries that took part in the launch.

"We are determined to work together as advocates of renewable energy at the global level," said Peter Altmaier, the German minister of environment.

"Irena has made remarkable progress in advancing the renewables agenda and the Renewables Club will work in support of Irena's objectives and programme."

Adnan Z Amin, Irena's director general, said the deployment of renewable energy worldwide would only be possible with the full commitment and support of countries.

The next club meeting will be hosted in January by the UAE in the margins of the Irena Assembly.
