UAE’s ‘Green Sheikh’ becomes Earth ambassador
ABU DHABI // The UAE's "Green Sheikh" has become the 16th ambassador of the Earth Condominium, an organisation working for the protection of the planet and preservation of peace.
Dr Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi, affectionately known as the Green Sheikh for his environmental work, is only the second Arab to receive the honour.
Mustafa Al Ammar, an Iraqi-born singer and actor who has also been active in the field of ecology, was appointed an ambassador in July 2011.
The honour is "an achievement to the UAE, particularly, and to the Arab world at large," Sheikh Abdul Aziz said during a joint press conference in Ajman on Tuesday, with Mr Al Ammar on his side.
"There are still huge challenges in the face of environmental development in the Arab world, and everyone has to get involved if these challenges are to be overcome," he noted.
