Minister: No diesel leak on White Whale
The Government has denied that diesel is leaking from the wreckage of the White Whale ship that sank off the Umm Al Qaiwain coast.
Fishermen yesterday reported seeing diesel in the water surrounding the wreck and said they would avoid fishing in the area.
However, Dr Mariam Al Shanasi, the undersecretary at the Ministry of Environment and Water, denied there was any such leakage.
"At the moment, there is nothing," she said.
She added that the ministry had not abandoned plans to salvage the vessel.
"It is not a matter of doing it fast, but doing it gently and with minimum risk for the environment," said Dr Al Shanasi.
A Dubai shipbuilding company said last month it was to salvage the ship as soon as the weather allowed.
The White Whale sank four months ago.
