ABU DHABI // Local meat will soon be available at supermarkets across the country, the Abu Dhabi Farmers Services Centre (FSC) announced on Sunday.

The centre has received its first order to supply lamb, veal and chicken to Carrefour. It is already supplying to Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society, Spar and Lulu hypermarket, and is in discussions with Al Ain Cooperative.

“Our role is to support the development of local products to support sustainable agriculture in Abu Dhabi,” said Chris Hirst, the centre’s chief executive. “Livestock is a key component of this strategy.”

Products include sheep, goats, calves and poultry, as whole carcasses or in chopped parts sourced directly from Abu Dhabi farms. The centre plans to supply other local meat, including rabbit, quail and pigeon.

The initiative is part of the FSC’s plan to expand the marketing of local meat products.

“We aim to increase the farmers’ income through the marketing of their products to consumers in an attractive way,” said Mr Hirst. “We work through all stages of production and the supply chain to improve these products, whether agricultural or animal, so that it meets consumer demands. The opening of promotional and marketing channels for farmers should allow more farmers to expand into the commercial raising of livestock such as sheep, goats, poultry and rabbits.”

The centre will begin the supply of large quantities of fresh domestic meat to local branches of Carrefour.
