Three shops were destroyed after a fire broke out at the Fujairah Friday Market.
Fujairah Civil Defence received a report about the blaze at 4.43am on Friday and immediately dispatched firefighting teams to the site in Masafi.
Firefighters from Al Manama and Kadra civil defence stations prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring shops. No injuries were reported.
“The team succeeded in securing the place that contained inflammable materials from textile, carpet and furniture stores and managed to extinguish the fire which only resulted in material losses, without any injuries,” said Fujairah Civil Defence.
In 2015, the market was badly damaged in a massive fire that tore through 13 carpet and furniture shops and 16 fruit and vegetable stalls.
The market is a popular attraction, particularly each Friday. Located 35 kilometres inland from Fujairah city, it began in 1990 when a few Emirati farmers set up stalls by the roadside selling fresh fruits and vegetables and other products.
It soon became well-known around the emirate, with various sellers lining either side of Al Dhaid-Masafi Road, and attracts hundreds of tourists and visitors, especially on Fridays during winter. It is considered to be the best place to buy rugs and carpets from Iran, Pakistan and India.
