Environmental health and safety tops agenda at Dubai Municipality meeting

Dubai Municipality discusses ways to improve environmental health and safety.

DUBAI // Ways of improving environmental health and safety are being discussed by Dubai Municipality.

A two-day meeting, which ends on Tuesday, is focusing on 11 areas, including air quality, food safety, drinking water and consumer products, said Salem bin Mesmar, the municipality’s assistant director general for environment, health and safety.

City cleanliness, drainage systems and pest control are also being discussed.

The meeting is seen as a step towards new regulations.

The municipality has been evaluating the 11 areas with other government departments, including the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environment and Water, since December last year.

“Dubai Municipality has analysed the status of these 11 points, what are our strengths and weaknesses, what is threatening Dubai, what is an opportunity for Dubai, and today we are informing our partners and looking forward to receiving some ideas,” said Mr bin Mesmar.

“This is the goal of the workshop, to receive some comments, ideas, suggestions, objections on environmental health issues.”

The aim is to produce an action plan that will be presented to the health and safety committee of the Dubai Executive Council next month.

This is the second time Dubai Municipality has carried out such an initiative. The first time, in 2006, resulted in the establishment of the municipality’s health and safety department.
