A new plan for developing the country’s agriculture and fishing sectors has been announced by the Ministry of Environment and Water.

The ministry will implement a new strategic plan in 2017, in line with the UAE Vision 2021 and according to guidelines related to the safeguarding of the environment and management of live resources, Dr Rashid bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, said.

The plan would ensure the UAE fulfils international obligations by restructuring the agriculture and fishing sectors.

Part of the plan is to boost the UAE's food security by developing the fishing sector. The UAE imports 15 million tonnes of food, according to Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National.

The announcement came during a ministry forum in Dubai this week.
