Dubai names Karama's cleanest establishments

Dubai Municipality has given certificates and trophies to the cleanest shops in the busy market area.

DUBAI // Ten shops in Karama have been awarded prizes for their high levels of cleanliness.

Dubai Municipality's "Say Yes to a Clean Karama" campaign, launched last month by the waste-management department, was aimed at 1,500 shops in the popular market area.

The top three winners were Mountains Way Accessories, Karachi Darbar Restaurant, and Rosaliah Perfumes. The owners were awarded certificates of appreciation and trophies to display in their shops.

"We had a team of 13 inspectors checking all the shops in Al Karama market and noticed that many shops were embracing the campaign," said Suhail Al Awadhi, head of Bur Dubai Cleaning Unit and leader of the inspection team.

"They were very careful to keep the front of their shops clean and even went as far as encouraging their customers not to litter and throw cigarette butts."

The campaign has had a clear effect on the overall cleanliness and health of the area, he said.

Khaled Taheri, whose family own Mountains Way Accessories, said they had not done anything out of the ordinary to win the prize. "This is what we usually do every day," he said. "We treat this place like our home. It's not just a morning chore, we make sure the place is always clean and if we find something we clean it ourselves. We don't wait for the municipality people to come and clean it.

"This is an important message for everyone. This city is our home so we have to take care of it – be proud to keep our city clean."

Mr Al Awadhi said the next municipality cleaning campaign would be in Al Qusais.
