An application that can forecast sandstorms in Dubai is now available. It sends alerts to users to warn them of upcoming dust storms.
App may take wind out of Dubai sandstorms
Dubai Municipality has launched an app that can forecast and monitor sandstorms in Dubai.
The system works around the clock in identifying areas that are subject to sandstorms and low visibility across the emirate. It then sends an early alert to users.
The Google application, Najm Sohail, provides weather forecasts across Dubai by allowing users to choose a weather station nearby. Users will receive information from the station including weather forecasts and alerts on fog, rains, tidal waves and sandstorms.
Sandstorms are a major problem in the Arabian Peninsula, and can influence navigation routes and travel.
The availability of weather-related information on smart phones allows users to study aerial images of the region. Countries affected include the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
