Abu Dhabi producing six times more waste per capita than France

That statistic is one of the preliminary findings from the emirate's sustainability performance study.

ABU DHABI // Abu Dhabi is producing 10 times more waste per capita than the Czech Republic and six times more than France. That statistic is one of the preliminary findings from the emirate's sustainability performance study, which was made public yesterday. To measure how sustainable Abu Dhabi's growth is, the Executive Council has designed an index that evaluates performance in 45 key parameters, with 100 being the top score.

"We use around three times as much water per person than the average UK resident," said Darin Rovere, the president of Sustainability Excellence, a private consultancy. "We need to reduce our environmental impact by 50 per cent or more in order to meet sustainability criteria and continue to be economically competitive over time." The amount of waste the emirate produces was not revealed. However, the 2005 Factbook published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development found that the Czech Republic produced 280kg of municipal waste per capita and France 530kg per capita in 2003.

"What we see is that we are about 42 per cent towards sustainability," said Mr Rover, who spoke yesterday at the second annual meeting of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group. vtodorova@thenational.ae
