ABU DHABI // Organisers are hoping for a record turnout at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, which begins on Wednesday.
As well as being a showcase for hunting equipment, the event also highlights the conservation schemes that are continuing in the country.
Majed Al Mansouri, chairman of the organising committee, said the event began with a handful of participants who, after advice from the Founding President, Sheikh Zayed, were committed to saving the wild falcon from extinction.
Now in its 13th year, it has become a huge show that attracts hunting enthusiasts from around the world.
“It became a destination for all hunting and equestrian gear producers, as well as tens of thousands of visitors and interested parties,” said Mr Al Mansouri, who is also executive director of Emirates Falconer’s Club.
Falconry has remained at the heart of Adihex, said Mr Al Mansouri, with it becoming a meeting point for falcon breeders from all over the world. He said the exhibition had played its part in keeping falconry and other Emirati traditions alive.
This year, the show will have 16 events, including competitions for the biggest and most beautiful falcons, as well as Saluki competitions.
Adihex will also have competitions judging the best artwork, poetry and photography depicting falcons, hunters and equestrianism.
Al Ain Zoo has announced it will promote conservation, captive breeding and the reintroduction of endangered species during its participation at the exhibition.
Muna Al Dhaheri, chief of conservation and education at the zoo, said: “We also hope to inspire the younger generation to learn more about wildlife.”
Adihex will run daily until Saturday at Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre. Opening hours are 11am to 10pm.
