A large ship has been hauled from the depths of the Arabian Gulf as part of a campaign to clean up the seas around Abu Dhabi.

The Department of Transport said the ship was found on the sea bed between Al Hudayriat Island and Al Bateen area of Abu Dhabi island and brought to the surface with the help of a private contractor.

When the vessel emerged, it appeared to have been undisturbed for several years. It was taken to a special impound area for abandoned ships in Musaffah.

The department is attempting to clean up water channels and improve the flows of shipping, as well improve safety and the marine environment. It was not clear when the boat was sunk or how it was retrieved.

Saif Al Mheiri, acting executive director of the Maritime Sector at the DoT, warned owners of abandoned ships and derelict vessels that they should “remove them immediately and cooperate with the concerned parties to maintain a safe marine environment and support the recreational activities in the sector.”
