End of the road for original iPhones

Any first-generation iPhones that have not been upgraded may soon have to be as Apple could stop offering technical support for them by next month.

DUBAI // Any first-generation iPhones that have not been upgraded may soon have to be as Apple could stop offering technical support for them by next month.

The original handset could be classified as vintage in the US and obsolete elsewhere, according to leaked documents seen by the online Apple news site 9to5 Mac.

The changes would happen by June 11 and would mean users of the original iPhone, released in 2007, could no longer have the device serviced by Apple engineers.

Apple has not offered updates for the operating system of its original handset since the second model, the iPhone 3G, was released in 2008.
