ABU DHABI // UAE citizens were advised yesterday not to travel to Lebanon and Emiratis already there were urged to leave.

The Foreign Ministry advice follows days of clashes last week in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli between supporters and opponents of the Al Assad regime in Syria, in which eight people have died.

Emiratis required to remain in Lebanon for unavoidable reasons should contact the UAE embassy in Beirut, said Issa Abdullah Al Kalbani, director of the Department of Citizens Affairs at the ministry.

Qatar and Bahrain have also asked their citizens not to travel to Lebanon, and for those who are there to leave.

The Lebanese foreign minister Adnan Mansour said he hoped the advice would be reviewed because the situation in Lebanon did not require such steps. Tripoli has been relatively calm since Tuesday, despite sporadic shooting.
