Passenger killed and husband hurt in accident

An Emirati woman has died after a New Year's Eve car crash in Egypt.

Layla Ebraheem Sharaf and her husband Mohammed Hussain Al Marzouqi, who have been identified by Egyptian media, were passengers in a car which flipped over after the driver lost control en route to the airport.

Ms Sharaf died in the crash, with her husband and the Egyptian driver taken to hospital for treatment after suffering moderate injuries.

Ms Sharaf's body was flown to the UAE on Tuesday to be laid to rest at the Baniyas cemetery in Abu Dhabi.

Brigadier Gamal Al Rasheedi, of El Beheirah police station, said emergency services were alerted to the incident at 11.57pm on Monday.

The accident took place on a road leading to the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

Brig Al Rasheedi said emergency services arrived at the scene within two minutes and swiftly transported the injured parties to hospital.
