ABU DHABI // Hundreds of Emirati students are improving their English, maths and science skills on summer trips abroad.

About 500 men and women have been flown to Canada, the United States and Ireland as part of the Summer Abroad programme by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec).

The students were met at their destination airports and received orientation courses on the culture, language and history of their host countries. They were also issued phone cards to keep in touch with their families.

"There were no delays or complications in any of the flights the students took and their travel to their destinations went smoothly, thanks to how obedient they were," said Youssif Al Marzooqi, the project manager at Adec.

"Adec finished all the travelling procedures on time and dedicated a team to accompany the group of students to the Abu Dhabi and Al Ain Airports, where 14 groups of students travelled via 12 different flights.

"We are very optimistic that this year's Summer Abroad batch will succeed, similar to previous years."

It is the eighth year of operation for the programme, which is designed to teach students leadership skills and self-reliance in addition to academic subjects.

Summer Abroad is supported by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
