DUBAI // An Emirati man was killed yesterday in a hit-and-run accident on the Al Ain to Dubai road.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old S M, an Al Ain resident who worked in the armed forces, was trying to refuel his car on the hard shoulder at around 2.45pm when he was hit by a lorry.

“The truck driverslipped over to the hard shoulder and hit the young man. The impact was so strong he flew 12 metres in the air before he landed on the road,” said Lt Colonel Ahmed al Merri of the Criminal Investigations Department at Dubai Police.

A friend of SM - who he had called to help with his car - witnessed the accident and reported it to police.

“The victim’s friend was not able to provide much information on the type or colour of the truck or any other detail relating to the driver,” said Lt Col al Merri.

However, police were able to identify the type of vehicle from wreckage left at the accident scene and tracked down the truck to the Al Aweer industrial area.

The truck was partly fixed when found by police.

Officers also found traces of blood on the vehcile.

“We found the truck hidden in a small alley and waited for someone to approach it,” said Lt Col al Merri.

At around 9pm officers arrested the driver, identified as A H, 40, from Pakistan.
