Emirati jiu jitsu fighter wins gold just 24 hours after brother is killed in Yemen
An Emirati jiu jitsu fighter battled through grief to win a gold medal at the President’s Cup Round, just a day after hearing of the death of his older brother Abdullah.
Omar Al Hosani, 16, won the blue belt 81-kilo weight final at Al Jazira Club’s indoor sports complex on Saturday.
The body of Abdullah Al Hosani arrived in Abu Dhabi on Thursday and he was later laid to rest in Bani Yas Graveyard, lowered into the grave by his father and brothers.
The UAE Armed Forces did not release details of his death except to say his was on duty as part of Operation Restoring Hope, the Saudi-led Arab Coalition effort to restore the government of Yemen to power.
Omar was to travel with his club team Al Jazira to Brazil for the Grand Slam Rio from Friday to Sunday but has decided to pull out from the competition and instead be with the bereaved members of his family.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, visited the family home on Saturday, bringing feelings of comfort and pride to the family members, they said.
“During our last telephone conversation, just a few days before my brother’s death, I promised him I will win the gold. I am happy that I fulfilled my promise to him,” said Omar.
“My brother would have wanted me to compete at Rio as well, and win a medal for my club and country, but I have to listen to elders in the family at this difficult time.
“My martyr brother has been my role model for his discipline, determination, pride and patriotism.
“His Highness’ visit to our home shows his concern and how much he cares for us, the citizens. I was deeply moved by His Highness visit to our humble home.”
Abdullah Al Hosani, who lives in Al Falah, was recently married and was expecting the birth of child.
The father of martyr Al Hosani said Sheikh Mohammed's visit brought joy and pride to all family members.
“His Highness told me ‘I am not here to condole you but to congratulate you. You are the father of the hero martyr who sacrificed his life on the Flag Day.”
The General Headquarters of the UAE Armed Forces conveyed its “sympathy and deepest condolences" to his family, prayed to Allah that his soul will rest in eternal peace.
