DUBAI // A 10-year-old Emirati boy and his father were killed and six other family members injured in a traffic accident in Oman on Monday, police said.

A spokesman for Oman police said the family of eight were heading back to the UAE from the southern beach resort of Salalah when their vehicle overturned at about 10am.

“It is a very unfortunate incident. It seems like they were on vacation and they were heading back to the UAE when this happened,” the spokesman said. “All those injured were transferred to hospital,” the spokesman said. He added that the other six passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries.

The accident was the latest in a series of fatal crashes on the road to Salalah that have claimed Emirati lives in recent years, many of them during the region’s tourism summer season.

While Dhofar’s unique wet and foggy summer microclimate attracts thousands to Oman’s far south, the monsoon conditions also bring hazardous road conditions unfamiliar to most visitors.

Oman police posted a video on their Twitter account warning visitors of Dhofar Mountains’ foggy conditions and telling drivers to reduce their speed.

Road-safety experts often advice people to fly rather than risk the journey.
