An Emirati driver died on Thursday when his car ploughed into the back of a lorry during heavy fog.

The man, 38, was killed at 6.15am on the Emirates Road roundabout in Ras Al Khaimah.

RAK Police said that the accident happened during low visibility after heavy fog covered much of the country on Thursday morning.

“The heavy truck was in the right lane at the roundabout when the vehicle hit it from behind,” said Col Ahmed Al Naqbi, head of the traffic department.

The low slung metal guard on the rear of the lorry went through the front of the driver's Daihatsu and through the windscreen.

The Asian truck driver, 27, sustained multiple injuries and was transferred to the hospital along with the body of the Emirati, which was then returned to the relatives for burial.

Col Al Naqbi urged motorists to avoid speeding in low visibility conditions and use dipped fog lights instead of full beam.
