Emirates Road has been renamed Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in honour of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, ordered the renaming to acknowledge Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed’s “valuable role in advancing inclusive development nationwide”, according to Wam, the state news agency.
The road, completed in 2001, links Dubai with Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. In 2006 it was upgraded to six lanes, to carry up to 12,000 vehicles an hour.
The road is “projected to play an increasing tremendous role under the rapid pace of national development and massive urban expansion on both sides”, Wam said.
