The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) has begun distributing school bags to 5,000 pupils in Yemen’s Shabwah Governorate ahead of the new school year.

The organisation will also furnish local elementary and secondary schools with 1,000 double chairs. On Thursday, the ERC visited Al Baihany Elementary School in Ataq, a small city in the interior located 460 kilometres south east of the capital Sanaa.

Mohammed Al Muhaira, the head of the ERC team in Shabwah, said the project is part of a larger plan to support the governorate's education sector. Last week, a hospital and two schools were able to reopen in Ataq after being refurbished and restored by the ERC.

Mohammed Ali Lamlas, the director-general of the Education Office in Shabwah, expressed his appreciation for ERC relief efforts, reported state news agency WAM.
