Emirates Post worker jailed for seeking Dh100k bribe from customer

An Emirates Post revenue officer, who attempted to illicit a Dh100,000 bribe from a corporate customer, has been sentenced to one year in prison.
The Jordanian revenue officer, 28, collected and audited profits, among other duties, on behalf of Emirates Post office in Dubai.
In May, the officer told the owner of a shipping company, that deals with Emirates Post, that his company had been fined Dh2.4 million for manipulating revenues to avoid paying postal fees.
The company's Indian owner, 43, said he had never met the accused before being contacted by him and told him about the fines.
"The revenue books are all correct and audited by Emirates Post staff and the last audit took place in mid-April this year," the Indian man told prosecutors.
"He told me that he checked our books and found some irregularities and that we have been concealing some shipments to avoid fee payments," said the owner.
The accused asked him for Dh100,000 in return for helping reduce the fine amount to Dh400,000, following which the owner called police.
The Indian man was fitted with a recording device and given Dh100,000 in marked money by police. He was told to arrange to meet the defendant and pay him the bribe.
The accused took the money and was arrested in the car park of Al Mulla Plaza in Dubai.
In court last September, the accused denied a charge of bribery, but was convicted.
He was sentenced to one year in prison to be followed by deportation and fined Dh100,000.
