A Dubai-bound Emirates airline flight from Malaysia made an emergency landing in Chennai, India, following reports of smoke in the cockpit.

DUBAI // An Emirates airline flight bound for Dubai from Kuala Lumpur was diverted to Chennai in India following reports of smoke in the cockpit.

Flight EK409 made an emergency landing at Chennai International Airport on Saturday.

In a statement, an Emirates airline spokesman said crew and passengers were taken off the plane but had to stay overnight at Chennai because the technical issues could not be resolved that day.

"Because of the time on the ground resolving the technical issues, the crew were no longer able to complete the journey to Dubai within prescribed flying hours," said the statement.

"The passengers and crew were accommodated overnight in Chennai and departed this morning and arrived in Dubai at approximately 12.25pm local time.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but stress the safety of our passengers and crew is of paramount importance and will not be compromised."
