DUBAI // Freezing winter weather in the United Kingdom has forced Emirates and Etihad to cancel flights to and from the British capital.

Authorities at London's Heathrow airport today announced a reduced operating schedule. As a result six flights have been cancelled by the two UAE carriers today.

Etihad has scrapped EY11, which was due to leave at 2.40am from Abu Dhabi to London and the return EY12 that was scheduled to leave at 9.15am from London.

"Arrangements are being made to assist all affected passengers, said a statement on the airline's website.

"They are being advised of alternative flights and, where necessary, overnight accommodation will be provided in Abu Dhabi."

The airline said there were no current plans to cancel flights to other UK destinations.

Emirates has cancelled flights EK29 and EK05 that were to leave Dubai at 9.40am and 4.30pm, as well as EK30 and EK06, which are due to leave London at 4.35pm and 10pm today.

Both airlines said they would be monitoring the weather situation in Europe and urged passengers to check for updates on www.emirates.com and www.etihadairways.com respectively.
