Emerging arts talent recognised
DUBAI // The arts community has recognised its emerging talent at a gala awards ceremony.
Nine artists won a total of Dh180,000 in prize money in the sixth Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award (Yaa) on Saturday night.
First place in the fine-art category went to Walid Al Wawi, whose playful painting Place The Dots featured a series of Arabic words with their diacritic dots removed.
Omar Aly Mohamed won the top award for photography, and the Chinese-born conceptual artist Lantian Xie won the multimedia category for his frenzied animation depicting fast food.
First, second and third places in each category took Dh30,000, Dh20,000 and Dh10,000 respectively. The People's Choice Award, voted for by the public online, went to Arwa Al Absi Al Jundi for her oil on canvas work.
The three winners in each category were selected by leading arts figures, out of more than 200 submissions from 11 different nationalities.
Muna bin Kalli, the executive director of Dubai Ladies Club, said the award's vision lay with its founder and patron, Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the president of the Dubai Women's Establishment.
"We believe that such art initiatives are essential for building innovative thinkers who will be the world leaders of tomorrow," Ms bin Kalli said.
