ABU DHABI // An emergency task force has been set up to deal more quickly with gridlock and other traffic problems. The municipality's 24-hour Roads Emergency and Crisis Team will handle incidents ranging from traffic-light glitches and accidents to the collapse of infrastructure. Its formation comes seven weeks after a minor road closure brought the capital to a standstill. On June 1, junctions became snarled with traffic after a few roads were closed to allow a crane to be moved. Some motorists said it took up to four hours for them to drive across the city. However, a municipality spokesman said the task force had not been set up in response to any one event.
"It is for rain, emergencies or other general problems," he said. "It will be ready for 24 hours a day to help with any problems." @Email:amcmeans@thenational.ae
