UAE University will fund 116 research grants worth Dh39 million, it has announced.

The funds will be allocated to research addressing challenges in various scientific disciplines.

There will be three competitions: the University Competition for Advanced Scientific Research; one for multi-disciplinary research based on scientific centres; and one for start-ups.

Dr Ali Al Noaimi, vice chancellor of UAEU, said the university was keen to support researchers.

Dr Al Noami said the awards and funds would “encourage faculty members in presenting innovative ideas and creative solutions that befit our society and students, and are of benefit to humanity as a whole”.

Prof Riad Al Muhaydeb, vice chancellor for graduate studies and research, said grants had been approved for 52 projects on a competition basis this year.

“The University Competition for Advanced Scientific Research will consider research grant requests in sciences, engineering, medicine and biomedicine, information technology, food and agriculture, humanities, social sciences, management, economics, education and law,” Prof Al Muhaydeb said.

This is the first year for the multi-disciplinary scientific research and start-up competitions. Both aim to support research areas that are national priorities.

Grant requests have been received through the National Centre for Water, the Zayed Centre for Health Sciences, the Khalifa Centre for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, the Research Centre of Roads, Transport and Traffic Safety, and the Centre for Public Policy and Leadership.

Research grants have been awarded to 26 multi-disciplinary projects this year. Support for those in the startup competition has been provided to 38 faculty members.
