Engineering, IT and computer-science students from universities across the country took part in the ninth Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers UAE Student Day.

Hosted by the Ajman University of Science and Technology, the competition drew 264 students in 74 teams from 12 universities.

The students vied for one of 15 prizes in five categories: common design; engineering design; senior design; software engineering; and community service.

The teams had to build a translator from speech to sign language, a quad copter or a mini hydraulic lift, design a poster or perform community service.

“These students must be commended for their enthusiasm, dedication, commitment and desire to compete at the national level,” said Prof Mustahsan Mir, the institute’s UAE chairman of student activities.

“The competition level is very high and months of hard work are spent on developing and perfecting the projects.”

Ajman University students won seven awards, more than any other school.

Khalifa University took home four prizes, the American University in Sharjah won two awards and the Petroleum Institute and UAE University earned one each.

Prizes ranged between Dh500 and Dh1,500.

“At Aust our students have utilised the latest technology at hand to accomplish projects that serve the community at large,” said Dr Fahr Hayati, dean of engineering.

“The humanitarian spirit instilled in the values of our goals have been embodied in the projects submitted by Ajman University.”

The students spent two days building their projects at the Ajman University Sheikh Zayed Centre for Conferences and Exhibitions before presenting their innovative creations on Saturday to a panel of 40 supervisors and judges.
