ABU DHABI // Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has been named the Education Personality of the Year by selectors of the Khalifa Awards.

Selectors said Sheikh Mohammed, also Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Education Council, was chosen for his efforts and long-term projects in education.

“The selection of Sheikh Mohammed as the first winner of this category is the least we could do to bring to light his efforts and continuous support to education and knowledge,” Amal Al Afifi, secretary general of the Sheikh Khalifa Award for Education, told the state news agency Wam.

The “personality of the year” award, introduced this year, recognises his work in raising the UAE’s education profile to match international standards.

The Khalifa Award was set up in 2007 to highlight innovative education initiatives in the country and the Arab world.

About Dh2.6 million will be given to 34 educators who were selected this year in a range of categories.

The winners will be chosen from a list of 500 nominees approved by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs and chairman of the award’s board of trustees.

The award ceremony will take place at Emirates Palace hotel on April 15.
