DUBAI // A lecture on earthquake safety measures will be held at Deira municipality's city hall tomorrow at 12.30pm.

A seismologist from the civic body's survey department, Dr Kamal Atiya, will talk to employees about how to respond in the event of an earthquake, why they occur and how they are measured.

The lecture, which is open to the public and will be presented in Arabic, is being held on the same day that a hoax message predicted the GCC would be rocked by a powerful earthquake. The UAE's National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology was quick to debunk the claim, and Dr Atiya's lecture will help to explain why it is not possible to predict an earthquake, or its magnitude, that far in advance.

The audience will be also updated about the UAE's earthquake monitoring network and the plans emergency responders have in place to deal with such situations.
