Sub-committees expected to work closely with the National Electoral Commission to run the technical and administrative affairs of the FNC elections in each emirate.
Each emirate to host FNC electoral committee
Electoral commissions are to be set up in each emirate of the UAE in the run-up to elections for the Federal National Council (FNC), the state news agency Wam reported yesterday.
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) for the FNC yesterday gave the go-ahead to form the sub-committees, which, according to Wam, would "work closely with the NEC in running the technical and administrative affairs of the FNC elections in each emirate".
The NEC was holding its third meeting yesterday under the chairmanship of Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affairs. Dr Gargash reviewed a draft timetable of the elections, Wam said.
No date has been given yet for when the elections will take place.
FNC members have called for a comprehensive election law to establish who is entitled to run for office and who is eligible to vote, to set election timetables, and to determine campaign rules and spending limits.
Guidelines governing the next elections, announced this month by the FNC, defined the minimum number of electoral college members in each emirate as 300 times the emirate's number of representatives on the FNC.
