Hundreds of volunteers including police officers and school pupils have retrieved more than 5,000kg of marine litter from Dubai’s shores.
The major clean-up of Al Hamriya Port in the emirate took place on Sunday, with teams of divers collecting old tyres, ropes and plastic waste.
The initiative was first launched by the marine rescue division at the Ports police station six years ago.
This year saw more than 530 people come together to join the campaign to help keep the local marine environment clean.
“The initiative, which plays a significant role in preserving marine life and spreading awareness about its importance, is part of Dubai police’s social responsibility programmes,” said Lt. Col. Ali Al Naqbi, head of the marine rescue division.
“[We] aim to contribute to making the emirate’s marine environment a sustainable one that is free of pollutants.”
